Happy Ending?!?

romeo-and-juliet-1968

What is a Happy Ending? The definition can vary from one individual to another, and so I ask the question. While some of you may immediately picture a woman of Asian decent in a massage parlor, let’s step away from that image for a minute. When we look at love stories we picture Happy Endings as “happily ever after” as Disney movies demonstrate. However, the recent question posed was based on Romeo and Juliet. Being defined as the greatest love story, “Romeo and Juliet” has been presented in literary and film corners. However, while we look at “Romeo and Juliet” as the greatest love story based on the fact that we see the couple’s few encounters and undying love for each other, the question that arises is what if they didn’t die? Push or Precious?

precious-gabourey-sidibe-1[1]

An avid reader, I am drawn to books of difference. Best seller lists never attracted my attention. Often I laugh at people choosing the book after watching the movie. A book may be in print for ages and not one soul will pull it off the shelf to carry to the nearest register and commit to paying $14. Yet, once the film is released and we notice the small print on the advertisement “based on the novel… by …” we immediately rush to Barnes and Noble (due to lack of book shops, where an elderly woman would caress the thinning pages of a masterpiece and recite the content as though one of the great writers) and purchase whatever the book may be. And of course my favorite is the commentary upon reading the literary piece of ahhs and ohhs in presenting oneself as an Einstein of discovery as you too have committed to a read every other moron is reading, simply due to the fact that now the story is on the big screen. Daddy
by: Sylvia Plath

You do not do, you do not do
Any more, black shoe
In which I have lived like a foot
For thirty years, poor and white,
Barely daring to breathe or Achoo.

Daddy, I have had to kill you.
You died before I had time–
Marble-heavy, a bag full of God,
Ghastly statue with one gray toe
Big as a Frisco seal

I pass the mike on to you

While I struggle to ignite the fire within and release the words to fill the ever empty sheet, I pass the mike on to you. In attempting to gather brilliant anecdotes and thoughts, i fight to entice you into the world once loved, yet ignored for decades past. I have flipped the page of many hard bound literary treats, but have yet to come upon a mind of similarity. And so i ask you to continue the thread by sharing recommendations of literary nature so we can all gather in unison and continue the tradition of reading.
Write what you may; book name, your review of it, and whatever else you may be motivated to share.

I am still reading

A few weeks ago, after watching the movie “Julie and Julia”, I purchased the book. It may be my strong belief in the theory of book vs. movie, but I found myself rushing, yet again, to the nearest Barnes and Noble. In personal experience, the book is ALWAYS much better than the film. You might imagine my surprise when I didn’t immediately become attached to the book. At first I was extremely excited to rip open the cover and read the first line strategically placed (more…)

Escaped Sex Slaves

I have often contemplated donating funds to a good cause, but how could i decipher between all the causes presented all throughout the media? I have often seen commercials on TV stating that my donation of $20 per month would feed a child or several for a month, yet how could I be sure where my money would really go. Having worked in non-profits for years, I have come to realize that after deductions for overhead and staffing, my $20 turns into barely a few, and I simply couldn’t trust that the monthly received picture of a child whom I am helping support really meant anything. I have since focused on providing assistance to those few who I personally know are in need, whether through donation of clothing and furniture or a hot meal. However, yesterday while flipping through the pages of November’s Marie Claire I came across a story of Sreypov Chan entitled “Diary of an Escaped Sex Slave”. Reading

Reading, such a great activity for the development of the mind and imagination. I have been in love with books since the discovery of V. C. Andrews at the tender age of eleven. Lights out at nine meant pulling the flashlight out from under the bed and hiding under the covers. At the age of seventeen i became addicted to Danielle Steel and quietly hid the book in my lap while sitting behind the desk of my cubicle. Several years later an English teacher introduced me to Chekhov, Tolstoy, Flaubert, Hemingway, and Fitzgerald; I was hooked. Suddenly my book collection and credit card balance began to grow simultaneously. (more…)

Currently Reading

I have finally purchased yet another book by Paulo Coelho. I find that in reading his books I develop a cruel desire to follow in the footsteps of the heroine. While the title of this novel suggests the content of witchcraft, in reading the book i am quite pleasantly surprised to find a real life connection in which a regular human being develops the ability to rise above regularity and develop a true sense of the universe and our connection to it. My Last Read

Brida by Paulo Coelho

Finally i have read a book from cover to cover! While I absolutely love Paulo Coelho I must say that with each reading i am more impressed with his writing. If you have ever found yourself utilizing the term “soul searching” this is an incredible addition to your collection. Personally i do not believe in summarizing a book as i am a strong believer that we each interpret the message differently. (more…)
